I brushed my hair back from my forehead and rubbed a hand down my face. It took more effort than I wanted to extend to reach into my closet to grab another black button-down shirt. I looked over at the one I’d had on about twenty minutes ago, or what was left of it. I was slightly irritated that another shirt was ruined because I always made it a point to do what I needed to do as cleanly as possible.

The crumpled shirt on the floor was the perfect metaphor for how messy that last kill had been. It had made me wonder how out of practice I’d become, but this mission was accomplished, nonetheless.

Once I finished buttoning my current shirt, I picked up my old one and held it on the tip of my finger, examining the destruction. The rips in it showed how rough the fight had been, but I only had a single scratch on me and bruised knuckles, while the asshole was dead.

That fact did nothing to soothe my annoyance. Black button-down shirts were a central part of my wardrobe at this point and made it simple for me to always have something to wear instead of fussing over whether something matched. I was able to devote more time to my business and to the Chevaliers because of it.

That now included Iris because she was my business. There was no way I would ever forget about her. I shouldn’t be thinking about her as much as I was. Having a twenty-year-old take up most of my thoughts was something I never thought would happen. She was too young and had her whole life ahead of her. I shouldn’t be feeling this way, but my desire for her won out over logical thinking.

It's what made the hasty decision to go see her a problem. I hadn’t been planning on sneaking into Payne Hall, but I was already in the area, so there was no harm if I stopped by. Or so I thought. It ended up leading me down a path I hadn't expected, including some things I wanted to do since the first time I snuck into her room.

Luck was on my side because she wasn't in her room, allowing me to do what I'd wanted to, uninterrupted. It gave me the opportunity to enable her phone tracking and give me access to her location. As long as she had her phone on her, I knew where she was.

Which was how I knew that she'd gone to stay with Bianca Henson a few days ago, but was now back at Westwick going about her life as normally as she could. Running over to Bianca's place and causing chaos was an option that I considered, but I decided to hold off because I believed she needed space. All of this was a lot to handle and, while I had faith that she would be able to handle everything, it was still a lot to take in at one time.
